perimeter. Near the planet’s south pole is another storm, the Small Dark Spot, also with methane cirrus clouds around it. Between the two spots is a triangular white area called the Scooter; the Scooter lies deeper within the atmosphere and appears to traverse the planet more quickly than the ponderous storms. But appearances can be deceiving: Research has shown that Scooter is actually more or less stationary, while the two storms move in a direction opposite to the planet’s rotation, blown by winds up to 2,000 kilometers per hour. Addi- tionally, the planet reveals band- ing, particularly near its south pole, similar to that seen on Jupiter and Saturn.
